MARION, N.C.--The Marion District of the Western North Carolina Annual Conference raised $25,000 and packed 100,038 Stop Hunger Now packages for Haiti.
The effort involved 300 volunteers working at Marion UMC. Some volunteers poured scoops of rice, dehydrated vegetables, a soy-flour mixture and vitamin tablets into a funnel, while other volunteers held plastic bags to catch the food. The bags were then taken to volunteers to weigh, seal, and package the food into boxes. Each plastic packet provides six nutritious meals at 25 cents per serving.
