The Society of St. Andrew, a partner organization of the General Commission on United Methodist Men, has teamed up with singer Doug Allen and songwriter Sam Zamarripa to produce “The Song of Thanksgiving.”

The song is available on iTunes for 99 cents, and each song purchase will provide 15 servings of fresh fruit and vegetables to those who need them most.

Listen to the song at http://www.endhunger.org/Thanksgiving/.

The Song

I wrote The Song of Thanksgiving to be sung as a prayer at our family Thanksgiving dinner. The song has a simple melody and can be sung easily by most anyone.

The original recording was a cappella, but when we decided to share the song, we thought it would be more enjoyable with an accompaniment on piano or guitar.

The lyrics of the song portray something of a confession as well as a commitment to hope, all in the context of this special day for gratitude. We hope you will sing your own version of this song for your friends and family on Thanksgiving. Let us know how it goes...

Lyrics

Have I thanked you for your powers of forgiveness?
For the grace you give to live on day by day?
Have I thanked you for the moonlight and the rivers?
For my children and my family today?

[Chorus]

No I haven't, Lord, 'cause I've been busy living.
Taking but not giving back to You.
But today we pray tomorrow will be better
And I thank you, Lord, for living
Thank you Lord for giving
Giving us Thanksgiving Day.

I've forgotten all the times that I've forgotten
To thank you for the many things you've done for me
I promised I would share my wealth and treasures
With the lonely, Lord, the helpless, and the weak
But I haven't, Lord, 'cause I've been busy living.

[Chorus]
